KAUAI GOLF COURSES

PRINCEVILLE RESORT

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Golf Digest has named The Prince Course the Number One golf course in the State of Hawaii. It is also included in their prestigious list of "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses." The Prince is one of Hawaii's most challenging golf courses, with a USGA course rating of 75.3 and a 145 slope. But fear not. Five different tees on each hole allow you to set your own challenge. Named after Prince Albert, the only son of King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma, The Prince is Robert Trent Jones, Jr.'s masterpiece. Looking as if it had emerged full-blown from nature, it chugs uphill, jumps ravines and careens downhill like a roller-coaster. Golfing is one of the top things to do in Kauai

or fax the Prince Course
at (808) 826-4653

Prince Course, 14th Hole - Par 3
This hole is a strong par 3. Don't be afraid to go for the green as it is well pitched towards the
front to accept the well-struck iron, and the bunker shot is no bargain. If the tradewinds are
blowing, aim at the bunker or the trades will take your ball toward the cliff.

Prince Course, 16th Hole - Par 4
Maybe the longest 375 yard par 4 in the world. A well-struck drive will climb into the stiff
wind funneling up the valley and leave a somewhat blind approach shot into the still elevated
putting surface requiring at least two and maybe three more clubs than normal.

MAKAI GOLF COURSE

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Golf Digest lists the Princeville Makai Course in its Top 50 Resort Courses, and has included it in "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses" for 16 consecutive years. The Makai is really three courses in one: the Ocean Nine - venturing closest to the Pacific, the Lakes Nine - winding its way around serene lakes and the Woods Nine - diverting its way through native woodlands.

Course Features include:

Private lessons/clinics
Tournament assistance
PGA professional staff
Club and shoe rentals

Makai Course, Ocean Nine, 7th Hole - Par 3
One of the world's best golf holes!!! Play the hole smart by favoring the left side of the green. A ball short of the green could end up in the Pacific Ocean. Even if you are not playing the championship tees, walk back to observe and enjoy a spectacular 360° degree view of the north shore

Makai Course, Lakes Nine, 1st Hole - Par 4

Generally played into the wind, this medium length hole can often play 20 to 30 yards
longer than posted. Lake on the left side of the hole can be reached by a wayward tee
shot or a short approach shot.

KAUAI BEACHES

Kauai has the most beautiful beaches on the planet...but requires caution during
high surf. Every beach on Kauai is different. To name a few of the favorites:

Barking Sands:
the longest stretch of white sand beach in Hawaii

Anini Beach county park: (Princeville) With shallow water and a reef that extends far out from the beach, this park offers the best snorkeling in Kauai.

Poipu Beach: Is the most popular beach on the south side of Kauai. Calm water surrounds a sandy promontory as an offshore reef causes the waves to break before they reach the beach. These breaking waves provide an opportunity for surfing while closer in there are calm waters that are safe for children. Poipu beach is popular because it offers safe swimming, wading as well as surfing opportunities. The offshore reef attracts fish between the reef and the coast so this is also a good beach for snorkeling and many varieties of fish can be seen here especially Triggerfish, Pufferfish and Angelfish. Snorkelers have fed food to these fish so they are often extremely tame and attracted to Snorkelers - expecting to be fed.

Hideaways Beach: A lovely sandy beach set at the base of the cliff near the Pali Ke Kua Condominiums in Princevill. It is a peaceful spot, secluded and beautiful, actually two beaches connected by a rocky point. Swimming is not the best because of the coral bottom and the offshore rocks, but snorkeling can be very good in calm summer seas. Be cautious. As on all north shore beaches, snorkeling can be risky and is advisable only in a calm ocean; when the surf is up, current can become dangerous

Shipwreck Beach: By the Hyatt Hotel is usually signed as unsuitable for swimming and is usually used by only advanced swimmers, surfers and wind surfers. However it is worthwhile a visit to walk along as the thunder of the waves as they break on the beach is primal in a way that invigorates the spirit.

Polihale Beach:
At the far west side of Kauai is also not recommended for swimming but nonetheless is highly recommended to visit as this beach usually has the largest and most powerful waves of any beach on Kauai. Enormous energy can be felt as the waves boom and crash as they roll in and break on the beach. Remote from the rest of the island Polihale beach is huge and offers quiet solitude. Take your own supplies and water as there are no stores for miles. The advantage is the peace that induces introspection, especially as the sun sets. At the end of the beach can be seen the jagged cliffs at the beginning of the Na Pali Coast.

Baby Beach:
(OR "HOONA" BEACH) is ideal for very small children who are just learning how to
swim, since it is tranquil water in a small cove behind off shore lava rocks. The beach itself has sand and is accessed via a walkway on Hoona Road which is a small road of residences off Spouting Horn
road in Poipu.

Tunnels Beach: (a.k.a. Makua Beach) Highway 560 North Shore, Kauai. This is the superb snorkeling spot on the North Shore. The beach is 2-miles long, running from Hanalei Colony Resort to Ha'ena Beach Park. The center portion has a huge half-moon shaped reef just 1/8 mile offshore where snorkeling is the best.

Hanalei Beach: (crescent shaped) Weke Road North Shore, Kauai. The entire Hanalei Bay is ringed with a white sand beach. The surrounding mountains embrace this bay and, in the early morning when the ocean is like glass, it mirrors the beauty of the cliffs. The surfing in this area is famous and many locals as well as tourist visit the area. The Hanalei Pier is located on the east side of the long beach near where the Hanalei River enters the ocean.

Lumaha'i Beach: Highway 560 North Shore, Kauai. This picturesque beach was made famous by the movie South Pacific where Mitzi Gaynor "washed that man right out of her hair"!

Lava rocks scattered along the mouth of the beach create a waterfall effect as the surf breaks and recedes over the rugged terrain. The swimming, however, is another story. Strong currents, fierce
waves, and unbelievable backwash make the water here unsafe almost all the time.

Ke'e Beach: Highway 560North Shore, Kauai. Located literally at the end of the road, Ke'e Beach is probably the most visited beach on Kauai. The famed Kalalau Trail begins at the western end of the beach. Several movies and min-series have been filmed here such as The Thorn Birds and Castaway Cowboys.

Ke'e's inviting lagoon is teaming with fish and perfect for snorkeling. Beware, however of the Puka Ulua, an opening on the left side from the lagoon to the sea. Currents can be very strong here.

A short walk towards Ha'ena provides a panoramic view of the Na Pali Coast. Keep walking toward the Limahuli Stream. This is where Taylor Camp was located - the largest, most noted hippie colony on Kauai. Founded by the brother of actress Elizabeth Taylor, this colony had up to 100 residents before the state condemned the land and evicted them.

Fun Kid Stuff

Here's a few ideas to entertain the younger members of your family.

The Princeville Library has an extensive children's section (and some great books for adults, too). In addition, VCR rentals are only $1.00 each. Non-residents can join for a nominal fee and enjoy library privileges, including Internet access.

State Parks offer some easy hiking trails. One especially enjoyable trek is the Kuilau Ridge Trail, starting from the Keahua Arboretum. This 2-mile trail starts on a gentle upgrade and ends in a grassy picnic area with great views.

Snorkeling at Lydgate park is perfect for youngsters. There you will find a large rock lined perimeter that shelters a shallow area from the surf, encouraging schools of brightly-colored fish to swim in the calm water with the children.

Lydgate Park on Kauai is a family favorite. A rock-rimmed pool provides safe swimming for babies and toddlers, even in winter months. Adjacent is an enormous rock-rimmed pool which breaks the surf into rolling swells excellent for swimming, rafting, and floats of all kinds.

From the beach, you can hike to the magnificent Hanakapiai Falls. Short hikes can be enjoyed from trails beginning above Opaekaa Falls lookout in Wailua ( 35 minutes). (West Side)

The west side has exceptionally scenic sea cliffs and valleys that can be viewed from land along the coastal Kalalau Trail or by air and sea with commercial operators. Hiking the west side is a primitive recreational experience with a choice of a day hike to Hanakapiai Beach (2 miles one-way) or an 11-mile backpacking trip to a primitive camp at Kalalau and overnight stopovers at Hanakapiai and Hanakoa. The trail traverses high sea cliffs and lush valleys with plunging waterfalls and is strenuous.
